JBL PRX618S Self-Powered Subwoofer System

The JBL PRX618S is a compact, high-output 18-inch self-powered subwoofer from JBL Professional’s PRX600 Series. Designed to deliver the performance of an 18-inch subwoofer in a cabinet only slightly larger than a typical 15-inch subwoofer, the PRX618S combines an 18-inch Differential Drive® neodymium woofer with a 600-watt Crown® Class-D amplifier. JBL lists a maximum output of 129dB peak.

The PRX618S is designed for use both as a standalone subwoofer and as part of a subwoofer/satellite system. Its integrated stereo pass-through and selectable high-pass filtering allow it to be combined with full-range loudspeakers, while a polarity-reverse function assists with system integration.

Bass Driver

The PRX618S uses JBL’s 268G 460mm (18-inch) Differential Drive® woofer, incorporating a dual voice-coil and magnetic-gap design with a neodymium magnet.

The Differential Drive® design is intended to provide high acoustic output while keeping the overall driver weight down, making the PRX618S comparatively portable for an 18-inch professional subwoofer.

Amplification

The integrated amplifier is a 600-watt Crown® Class-D digital amplifier.

The amplifier is integrated into the subwoofer enclosure, eliminating the need for a separate external power amplifier. The input section also incorporates the subwoofer’s crossover functionality, signal processing and limiting functions.

Subwoofer / Satellite Integration

The PRX618S includes a 36mm top-mounted pole socket, allowing a compatible full-range loudspeaker to be mounted above the subwoofer.

JBL specifically designed the PRX618S to complement the PRX600 full-range systems, including the PRX612M and PRX615M. The integrated high-pass filtering, polarity reversal and stereo pass-through facilitate its use as part of a subwoofer/satellite system.

Cabinet Construction

The PRX600 Series cabinets use a combination of 25mm plywood on the top and bottom for additional rigidity and 18mm lightweight poplar plywood for the remaining cabinet construction.

The panels are structurally joined using tongue-and-groove joints, while the cabinet is protected with JBL’s DuraFlex™ finish.

The front grille is constructed from 16-gauge dent-resistant steel, providing protection for the 18-inch driver.
