The SME Series V is a precision 9-inch tonearm developed around a rigid, one-piece magnesium arm tube and a carefully engineered bearing assembly. Introduced in the 1980s, the Series V was designed with particular attention to mechanical rigidity, resonance control and accurate cartridge tracking.

Its one-piece pressure die-cast magnesium construction is internally damped to control residual vibration, while the precision bearing arrangement provides stable movement around the tonearm’s pivot. Magnesium Arm Construction

At the heart of the Series V is its one-piece pressure die-cast magnesium arm tube. SME selected magnesium for its combination of low mass and rigidity, while an internal constrained-layer damping arrangement is used to suppress residual vibration within the arm structure.

The cartridge platform is precision machined, with the design intended to minimise unwanted mechanical interaction between the cartridge and tonearm.

Precision Bearing Assembly

The Series V employs a substantial bearing arrangement engineered to maintain the arm’s freedom of movement while resisting unwanted movement in other planes.

The stainless-steel cross shaft is ground and thread-ground and carried in a substantial yoke on precision ball bearings. A separate stainless-steel vertical shaft and substantial pillar assembly provide the structural support for the arm’s vertical movement.

SME’s design places particular emphasis on maintaining rigidity around the pivot while allowing the stylus to follow the record groove accurately.

Dynamic Tracking Force

The Series V uses a dynamic balance system in which vertical tracking force is applied through a resonance-controlled spring mechanism.

VTF is adjustable from 0 to 3.0 g (30 mN). The adjustment scale provides fine control, allowing the cartridge to be set accurately according to its specified tracking-force requirements.

Fluid Damping and Anti-Skate

A built-in fluid damping system provides adjustable control of low-frequency lateral movement. The damping can be adjusted according to the requirements of the cartridge and record-playing system.

The Series V also incorporates a spring-operated anti-skate mechanism. The anti-skate control is graduated in relation to the vertical tracking-force setting and includes an OFF position.

VTA and HTA Adjustment

The tonearm provides dedicated adjustment of vertical tracking angle (VTA), allowing the arm height to be changed to accommodate cartridge geometry and setup requirements.

A separate adjustment system provides fine control of horizontal tracking angle (HTA). SME also supplies an alignment protractor and mounting template to assist with accurate installation and cartridge alignment.
